Notes for the South West Area Yardstick Handicapping Form
These notes are designed to explain what the PoFSA FAY handicapping team are trying to achieve with the FAY Handicapping Form and how you can help us to achieve it.
All the information that you put onto the form is used in the calculation of the basic FAY Handicap number.
The more accurate the information you give us, the more accurate the handicap you will receive.
It is important that all the dimensions you give us are in metric units, metres (m), square metres (m2) & kilograms (kg).
1) Basic Yacht Information - Yacht Name, Sail Number etc.
The important bits here are the type or design of the yacht. It is important to give us as much info as possible especially the year & which mark it is; Mk I, Mk II etc.
If you already have an IRC number, state it and, if possible, include a copy of the certificate as a PDF file after submission.
2) Dimensions of Boat.
LOA. Length over all, at deck level, excluding bowsprit, pushpit or pulpit.
LWL. Length on the waterline. This may be given by manufacturers or may be measured.
Beam. Measured at the widest part at deck level.
Draft. Measured from the water line to the lowest part of the keel.
Displacement. This is the weight of the boat dry, as it came out of the manufacturer’s premises, with no fuel or water and no other gear.
Ideally the areas (in square metres) given by the sailmakers, boat manufacturer or actually measured. If you are in doubt we will help you to measure them.
It is better not to estimate, as you may end up with a less favourable handicap than you might prefer. Please use the sizes of the largest upwind sails you will use.
The keel type, engine & prop are used in the IHS to arrive at your handicap. It is important to let us know if your keel has a bulb or flare, and the extent of it.
Sketches or photographs of the keel will be helpful & can be uploaded after submission.
Please remember that we are calculating a Yardstick which can be adjusted by some of the data on the form, as opposed to a Rating which is a straight
calculation with no adjustment. So, the more information you can give us the better. If you are unhappy with the handicap you are given please contact the
PoFSA Handicapping Team at the Race office with your reasons.
